Eligibility for student funding for nationals of the UK Overseas Territories for the academic year 2022 to 2023
These changes will not affect students starting classes on or before July 31, 2022.
If they are already eligible under the current system, they will remain eligible under the current system for the duration of their course.
Students will be eligible for Tuition Fee Loans in England if they:
- have an established status upon arrival in the UK
- come to UK from specified UK overseas territories
- start full-time and part-time undergraduate courses in the academic year 2022 to 2023
UK nationals and their family members in UK Overseas Territories are already eligible for access to Hospitality Expense Status if they meet the 3 year UK residence requirement, within British overseas islands and territories specified immediately before the start of the course. Family members of all people living in the UK will now have access to hospitality expense status.
To be eligible, they will need to meet the 3 year ordinary residence requirement in the UK, the Islands or certain UK Overseas Territories.
In addition, UK nationals and their family members residing in Gibraltar, as well as EU nationals and their family members who are entitled to reside there under the Withdrawal Agreement, may continue to count residency in the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland to qualify. for student support for courses starting on or before December 31, 2027.
Students with UK citizenship rights under the EU Withdrawal Agreement, EEA-EFTA Separation Agreement or Swiss Citizens’ Rights Agreement will be able to count periods of residence in the overseas territories of the EU and the UK under the normal 3-year eligibility period. for tuition loans.
Changes for the academic year 2022 to 2023
These changes will apply to students starting:
- postgraduate masters courses and postgraduate doctorate courses in 2022-2023 which will be eligible for postgraduate loans
- continuing education courses from 2022 to 2023 that will be eligible for advanced learning loans
