EU membership of the Western Balkans is important for all of Europe
The Polish prime minister, attending a panel discussion at the Strategic Forum in Bled, Slovenia on Wednesday, said that the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union is more important than the integration of Turkey.
According to Mateusz Morawiecki, the integration of the Western Balkans is of great importance for the whole European family.
“It cannot be closed inside today’s borders, which means the Western Balkans should be integrated into the architecture of the European Union as soon as possible,” Morawiecki said and added that friends are needed in the east, but also in the southwest flank of the EU.
Morawiecki said the maritime border is easier to defend than the land border. “The Western Balkans is knocking on our door and we have to make a decision very quickly,” Morawiecki said.
According to him, the events on Poland’s eastern border mean that migration and refugees will be the biggest challenge for the European Union in the decades to come.
During his visit to Slovenia, Morawiecki will also meet the Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Jansa. Topics to be discussed at the meeting will include the situation in Afghanistan and migration.
