German submarine exports to Turkey threaten Greece


Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias reiterated Greece’s security concerns over Germany’s refusal to ban submarine exports to Turkey, during a meeting with Social Party MP german democrat Nils schmid Wednesday.

Dendias said Greece was “disappointed to say the least” by the SPD’s vote against a bill banning the export of submarines to Turkey, adding that delivering submarines to a country that continues to destabilize the region would alter the balance of power to the detriment of states. who seek stability and respect international rules.

As for Greece, the Turkish threat constitutes “an existential challenge”, Dendias said according to diplomatic sources, while noting that the European Union should be up to the circumstances.

He also reiterated Greece’s disappointment at not being invited to the second ministerial conference in Berlin on Libya, according to the same sources. The Greek minister underlined the geographical proximity of Greece to Libya, and the fact that Greece converses with those who play an institutional role in this country. Greece is also one of the few countries to have an embassy in Tripoli and a consulate general in Benghazi, and which participates in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) program in Libya.

Special mention was made by Dendias that Greece is the only country in the region where the Muslim population has not been affected by extremist elements. He stressed the need to work with other countries, such as the United Arab Emirates, to support moderate Islam in the Balkans.

Greece maintains historic gratitude to the SPD, Dendias stressed, as former German chancellors Helmut Schmidt and Willy Brandt backed the then Greek prime minister. Konstantinos Karamanlis during the country’s accession process to the EU 40 years ago.

Finally, Dendias mentioned the issue of WWII reparations to Greece, which he said Greece continues to believe is unresolved, and public sensitivity on the issue.
