Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said the Balkans could be the European Union’s “next economic engine”, addressing a meeting of speakers from the Visegrád Group and South East Europe in Budapest.
Orbán said the Balkans are the EU’s “next big opportunity”, adding that West Europeans cannot maintain their current standard of living without the integration of the Balkans.
“If the Balkan nations have a chance, then just like the Visegrád countries [of Hungary, Czechia, Poland and Slovakia], they will accelerate the pace in several years, strengthen their economies, and that the great economic growth of the Balkans will arrive in the European Union “, he declared.
“The accession of the Balkan states is more important for the EU than for the Balkan nations themselves, not only in terms of security, but also from the point of view of the economic interests of Western Europeans”, said he added.
